Abuse Of Antibiotics Cause Resistance In Usage.


Reports indicate that the emergence and spread of antibiotic resistance has become one of the major problems confronting health delivery worldwide currently.

The problem is said to have resulted in increase in global death due to drug resistant pathogens.

Antibiotics are medicines used in the treatment of infectious diseases caused by germs and bacteria and can be produced naturally from micro-organisms or can be man-made, but the wrong use by some people is said to causing major health problems in the world, sometimes leading to pre-mature death.

This was revealed by the Project Co-ordinator for Re-Act Ghana, a Civil Society Organizations, Mr. George Hedidor during a health sensitization workshop organized by the Ghana Coalition of Non-Governmental Organizations in Health at Winneba in the Central Region.

The workshop which forms part of Ministry of Health?s health education initiative was aimed at creating awareness on the use of antibiotics and its effect on the human body.

According to medical experts at the workshop, antibiotics are gradually losing their efficacy in health delivery because of their wrong use by some people and as a result of this it is having serious implications on infectious disease therapy.

Reports released at the workshop indicate that research in Ghana has revealed that penicillin amoxicillin and contrimoxazole which are used in the treatment of gonorrhoea are no more effective because of abuse in the use of these drugs.

The Medical Director of the Trauma Hospital at Winneba, Dr. Richard Anongura who participated in the workshop therefore advised the public to desist from the practice of self-medication and consult a medical officer for the treatment of any health problem.
